WIN Research Projects

In 2002, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities launched its WIN-Kolleg with financial support from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MWK) of Baden-Württemberg. It is part of the Young Academy | HAdW. The goal is to support outstanding young researchers by funding interdisciplinary research groups. The Academy also promotes networking with outstanding scholars in the state, thereby helping to foster the members’ connection to and identification with Baden-Württemberg as a center of scientific excellence. In this context, members of the Young Academy in the WIN-Kolleg are directly integrated into the Academy’s program over an extended period and participate in shaping it.

In the WIN-Kolleg’s working groups, the recipients gain early in their careers firsthand experience of how fruitful it is to engage with other disciplines and collaborate across disciplinary boundaries. A key aspect of the WIN-Kolleg’s concept is that the groups work very independently, thereby acquiring skills that are essential for appointment to a tenured professorship. To date, 35 projects across eight research focus areas have been successfully completed; currently, seven additional projects across two research focus areas are receiving funding.
