Further research projects

In addition to the long-term projects of the National Academies Program, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities HAdW) is home to numerous research initiatives. This overview presents the broad spectrum of our externally funded projects, state-level initiatives, and academic collaborations.

The scope of research ranges from the cataloging of historical text corpora and the preservation of global cultural heritage to studies at the intersection of the humanities, natural sciences, and cultural studies.

The Role of Culture in Early Human Expansion (ROCEEH)


The aim of the research center is to reconstruct the spatio-temporal migratory movements of hominids between 3 million and 20,000 years ago.

Global Basic Lexicon (GloBasLex)


The “Global Basic Lexicon” (GloBasLex) project collects and documents basic vocabularies of the world’s languages based on published dictionaries. The goal is to build a freely accessible database of parallel word lists for 1,000 basic concepts, covering nearly all sufficiently documented languages worldwide. With around 1,500 languages from every continent, this is becoming one of the most comprehensive resources of its kind.

Buddhist stone inscriptions for CBETA


The project enables the digital data compiled at the research center "Buddhist Stone Inscriptions in China" to be linked to CBETA, an initiative that digitizes the Buddhist canon handed down in Chinese and makes it accessible according to scientific standards.

In cooperation with the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS), endangered cultural assets in Nepal are being documented, recorded, and made accessible online.

The DFG-funded project is developing an open-access publication platform for editions of inscriptions and research data in the field of ancient epigraphy.

The research center collects, catalogs, and edits letters written by leading theologians and church leaders during the period between the Peace of Augsburg and the Thirty Years' War.

The aim is to digitally provide and edit an extensive corpus of documents and texts on the religious and legal history of pre-modern Nepal.
