To encourage young researchers and ensure that outstanding scientific achievements receive the recognition they deserve, Prof. Dr. Dr. -Ing. E.h. Jürgen Wolfrum established a research award in 2025 to support young researchers in Baden-Württemberg.

The Prize awarded by the Academy's plenary session upon the recommendation of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Section.

It comes with a prize of €10,000.

Who can be nominated?

The prize is awarded to exceptionally talented young researchers who have distinguished themselves in the field of multidisciplinary collaboration between mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. Prize are evaluated based on their scientific achievements to date. The Prize generally awarded annually. Prize must have received their doctorate no more than eight years ago and must not hold a tenured position. The Prize be split among multiple nominees.

Who is allowed to make suggestions?
  • the full members of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities
  • the heads of academic departments at universities in Baden-Württemberg (rectors, deans, executive directors, and department heads)
  • the directors of non-university research institutes in Baden-Württemberg (executive directors)
  • Unsolicited applications are not accepted.

  • award-worthy work

When will the decision be made?

The Academy will announce its decision at the beginning of the year. The winner and their mentor will be notified of the result in writing.

Prof. Dr. Dr.-Ing. e.h. Jürgen Wolfrum is a full member of Academy of Sciences and Humanities Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). He is a senior professor of physical chemistry at Heidelberg University.

Jürgen Wolfrum has received numerous awards for his work, including the Max Planck Research Award and the Bunsen Medal.
