Documents on Economic Life

Documenta Nepalica | Sources on the History of Religion and Law in Pre-modern Nepal | Main Editors: Simon Cubelic / Axel Michaels / Rajan Khatiwoda / Ramhari Timalsina / Manik Bajracharya

Economic history has traditionally been a major strand in the historiography of premodern Nepal, especially through the studies of M.C. Regmi. The documents assembled here contribute to this scholarship in two ways. First, they show the manifold ways through which economic practices were embedded in larger social, cultural, and religious discourses and institutions such as temples, ritual communities, or guṭhīs. Second, the documents focus on actors and their strategic use of legal instruments to realize their economic interests, thereby providing examples of the role of societal agency in the formation of economic order in Nepal during the Śāha and Rāṇā periods.
