Dr. Romy Lorenz has an interdisciplinary background in psychology (BSc from Leuphana University in 2009) and human-computer interaction (MSc from TU Berlin in 2012). She completed her doctoral studies in neurotechnology at Imperial College London (PhD in 2017), during which she developed a novel brain-computer interface that combined real-time fMRI and machine learning to better understand the unique functional role of frontoparietal brain networks in human cognition. In her postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge, Stanford University, and the Max Planck Institute for Cognitive and Neural Sciences (2018–2023), she focused on investigating the function of the various cortical layers of the frontoparietal brain network using ultra-high-field fMRI. since , she has been a Max Planck Research Group Leader at the MPI for Biological Cybernetics. For her work, she has received funding from the German Scholar Organization, grants from the Wellcome Trust and the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, as well as numerous awards, including the Prize outstanding contributions to innovation in artificial intelligence.
