Duration: 1994 to 2007

The mission of the research project, established in Pforzheim from 1994 to 2007, was to produce a critical and annotated edition of Reuchlin’s correspondence. Johannes Reuchlin (1455–1522), born in Pforzheim, is considered one of the founders of early modern Greek and Hebrew studies. As a lawyer and diplomat, he held influential political positions in the Duchy of Württemberg. His courageous advocacy for Jewish literature, which was threatened with destruction, made him a leading figure in the Enlightenment’s struggle against all forms of “dark-minded people.” The research project was jointly supported by the Academy and the City of Pforzheim.
