In the high-mountain region of northern Pakistan, where the Hindu Kush, the western Himalayas, and the Karakoram meet, lies a collection of rock art along the Upper Indus and some of its tributaries and mountain passes that is unique in its diversity and ranks among the largest in the world. They are concentrated in the Indus Gorge over a stretch of about 100 km from Indus-Kohistan to the Raikot Bridge around the central town of Chilas, but can also be found along the river’s course as far as Baltistan and Ladakh. The over 50,000 rock drawings and more than 5,000 inscriptions span a period from the Epipaleolithic and Neolithic eras in the 6th/5th millennium BCE to the Islamization of the mountain region in the 14th century. In their diversity, the rock art reflects the influences of various ethnic groups and their cultural and religious beliefs, such as those of the Saka or Scythians in the 1st millennium BCE, and constitutes a unique collection of sources on the eventful history of this region connecting Central Asia and the Indo-Pakistani subcontinent.

Ein Großteil der Gravuren stammt aus der Zeit des Buddhismus, der nach seiner Einführung als neue Glaubensrichtung im 1. Jahrhundert zwischen dem 5. und 8. Jahrhundert seine höchste Blüte erreicht. Der historische Hintergrund dieser Epoche wird durch Felsinschriften deutlich, die in der älteren Phase in Kharosthi und seit dem 4. Jahrhundert in Brahmi abgefaßt sind, zu denen aber noch sogdische, baktrische, parthische, chinesische und tibetische Inschriften kommen. Außerdem wird angestrebt, auch die archäologischen Denkmäler wie Siedlungen, Festungsbauten und Nekropolen sowie die antiken Routen aufzunehmen. Ziel des Projektes ist die möglichst vollständige, zumindest repräsentative Edition und Analyse der einzelnen Felsbildstationen in Katalogbänden. Eine zweite Publikationsreihe ist einzelnen ausgewählten Themenbereichen zur Geschichte, Kulturgeschichte, Epigraphik, Ethnologie und Zoologie gewidmet. Das Vorhaben kann als ein Beispiel internationaler Zusammenarbeit mit Fachgelehrten aus England, Frankreich, Pakistan und den Vereinigten Staaten gelten.
