Heidelberg Collection of Classical Antiquities
The research center was tasked with making the collection of ancient original works of art and crafts at the Museum of Antiquities of the Archaeological Institute at Heidelberg University accessible to researchers through scholarly catalogs. Founded in 1848, the Museum of Antiquities now houses one of the largest archaeological teaching collections at German universities.
The most significant groups of artifacts included works from the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean region, primarily Greece and Italy: painted pottery; statuettes, reliefs, and architectural fragments made of terracotta and stone; bronze figures, vessels, and tools; fragments of wall paintings; clay lamps; and coins.
