The brutal struggle for a homeland—and the territorial claims associated with it—that so many people are experiencing today in diverse parts of the world can be traced back to a grand narrative found in the very first chapters of the Bible, a narrative that has been interpreted and reimagined in countless ways through music and imagery: The Israelites, oppressed during their exile in Egypt, succeed—with God’s (brutal) help—in setting out toward freedom. Handel’s Israel in Egypt is a powerful story of the ever-recurring search for a homeland. In this performance, the visually striking texts are intended to be experienced and felt musically—in dialogue with images of very different seekers of a homeland, here the Taiwanese multimedia artist FENG Chi-Han, who brings the story into the present and makes it tangible.
