Women's Spaces: Ceiling Paintings in Baroque Residences Commissioned by or for Women

"We conduct research. For you." III: Women's Spaces: Ceiling Paintings in Baroque Residences

Baroque ceiling and wall painting always took into account the function of a room and the status of its users. In doing so, it alludes to the room’s former social dimension and provided contemporaries with a guide to understanding it. Ceiling and wall painting holds a special place: it is site-specific and immovable. It is created for a specific room, ceiling, or wall and can only be experienced there in the way the artist and patron intended. This means that the same subject could have a completely different meaning depending on the room and its occupants. And so, ceiling and wall paintings in the rooms that women had decorated for themselves provide insight into their self-image. Rooms that men had decorated for women can reveal the roles intended for women. The lecture examines selected paintings from residential palaces, pleasure palaces, and widows’ residences.
