Conviviality as a religious educational task in history and the present day
WIN Conference
March 25 and 26, 2026
How can we successfully live together in a pluralistic society shaped by migration? This conference focuses on the concept of conviviality, the lived practice of respectful and supportive coexistence, and its significance as a religious educational task in history and the present. From the perspectives of migration research, theology, philosophy, and educational and social sciences, we will discuss how paths can be opened from exclusion and mere tolerance to affirmative conviviality, and what role the Christian commandment of love and interreligious ethical traditions play in this. Historical analyses, systematic reflections, and empirical studies on current migration discourses will be combined to clarify how values and practices of conviviality promote social cohesion. The aim of this event is to develop ideas for solidarity-based coexistence in culturally diverse societies and to redefine conviviality as a central resource for education and orientation.
Organizers: Prof. Katrin König (Paderborn), Dr. Christopher Nunn (Heidelberg)
The event will take place in a hybrid format at the academy and via Zoom. You can obtain the access data for Zoom by sending an email to christopher.nunn@theologie.uni-heidelberg.de (email link).
