Academy member Volker Wulfmeyer has become the first German to serve as co-chair of the GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Exchanges Project) committee for Land-Atmosphere System Studies (GLASS). 

A new study in *Nature* shows that, before spreading across Eurasia 50,000 years ago, humans began to exploit various types of habitats in Africa in ways previously unknown.
